Elm Easy Chair

A stand alone easy chair constructed in English Elm and upholstered in tweed to compliment the grain. The angular design of this chair was based on the shape of a waste skip and is constructed with through dovetails. The idea behind this design was to have a place to sit, which, although comfortable, could be a place to work or read from; the pitch of the seat, flat arm surfaces and slimline upholstery make this possible. The elm frame is finished in oil and then waxed.

Dovetails

This chair was interesting to make because of its construction. I felt that through dovetails complimented the angular design, so this is how I chose to construct the arm frames. These joints were a little awkward, each of the four arm corner joints were different, and they were all compound angles, meaning that they had to be cut in odd directions.

English Elm

English elm (Ulmus procera) is a beautiful timber both to look at and to work with. It is a coarse textured timber with irregular growth rings, giving an attractive figure to the grain. The heart wood is a dark grey brown colour, but often you can see streaks of green or even purple within this timber. Although elm is often in short supply, due to Dutch Elm disease, it is a pleasure to work with, and a beautiful and interesting timber to have in the home.
