Breakfast table

An oak kitchen table designed and built to complement some existing bar stools in a kitchen where space was at a premium. The table is much higher than normal because my client requested a multi function piece; it had to serve as a table, work surface and breakfast bar. This piece was finished in a hard wearing lacquer to prolong the appearance through tough usage.

Extender

This design features an extending top, with the leaf concealed within the frame when not in use. It is easily fitted as required, giving extra space at the table. The additional leaf is locked into its place in the table with clips which pull the three parts together tightly, ensuring a solid fit.

Table Top

The whole table is made from European oak. The pieces forming the top were specially selected for their interesting grain pattern and appearance. The top is made in three parts, each with a solid frame containing a captive panel to allow the timber to move. This was an important design decision; it had to work mechanically, and also allow the timber movement, which, in a kitchen, would be more likely than in dryer parts of the house.

Detail

The details of this piece include pinned tennons, showing the contrast of the end grain oak against the grain of the legs. On the table top a ‘V’ groove was routed giving the appearance of a cleated table top, even though, in fact, it was of frame and panel construction. This added the desired effect requested by my client.

Mechanism

Although an extending mechanism for this table could have been purchased, I chose to make this from oak as well. The two main leaves, once unclipped, pull apart to reveal the extra leaf under the table. This is removed from below and placed in between the two main leaves, these are then pushed up against the central piece and clipped together to form a ridged table top. The spare leaf, when not in use, is held on special rails under the table, with two toggles to secure it in place.
