Writing Desk

A straightforward design in beautiful English cherry. The front rail conceals three drawers of traditional dovetail construction, lined with Cedar of Lebanon. The desk is finished with white polish, and waxed to achieve a spectacular finish.

English Cherry

English cherry, with its interesting grain structure and colour, was chosen for the construction of this design. The timber was hand selected from the timber yard, and once in the workshop, each component was then mapped out to ensure only the finest pieces were used for the construction of the desk. Cherry is a relatively close grained timber and suits a fine finish such as White polish.

Drawers

This desk contains three drawers within the frieze. Each drawer is beautifully crafted in cherry to match the body of the desk. The drawers are lined with cock beaded drawer slips and Cedar of Lebanon bottoms. The drawer carcasses are dovetailed together and traditionally finished all round.

Under Frame

Fine table or desk construction requires stretchers or under frames for enhanced strength. This design includes a simple square sectioned stretcher at the sides and long double stretchers along the back.

Detail

This simple desk was designed to show the beauty of English cherry at its best. A few well chosen details add to the design without detracting from the beauty of the timber. The desk top has a hand planned double chamfer on all edges and the legs have a shadow line chopped into them under the drawer line. The rails are let in from the legs to add interest, and the rest of the detail comes from the patterns produced by the grain.

Desk Top

The most interesting pieces of cherry were chosen to produce the desk top. Five individual pieces were glued together with the grain patterns including ripples, and a whole palette of different colours, from greens to purples. The top design was finished with a double chamfer around the edge which both softens the top and allows a slimline appearance.
